Ever since Vietnam implemented the reform of granting land use rights to farmers in 1988, agricultural productivity has been greatly improved and contributed to Vietnam’s economic and social development. Despite rapid industrialization and urbanization, agriculture still employs 40% of Vietnam’s total workforce and accounts for 15% of GDP.

However, in Vietnam, agriculture is mainly small-scale and family-owned agriculture, mainly rice farming, and it is characterized by dependence on simple labor and concentrated natural environment.

In order for further improve productivity and add more value in Vietnamese agriculture, it is imperative to diversify crops, improve production technology, control quality, and link up with global value chains.

Meanwhile, in Korea, due to a decreasing agricultural population and an increase competitively in the number of imported vegetables’ price, the area under vegetable cultivation is decreasing (average annual decrease of 4% for Chinese cabbage, 3% for seasonal vegetables and 5% for dry red pepper), more than 90% dependent on China. Therefore, it is necessary to diversify the supply chain.
